I. Numbers in Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel spreadsheets are easier to create using your speech recognition software.  It is particularly easy to enter numbers and to move between cells using voice commands.

1. Start L&H Voice Xpress, turn on your microphone, and launch Microsoft Excel with the following command:

Open Microsoft Excel

2. After Excel opens, practice moving around the spreadsheet with the following commands.

Move right three columns

Move right five columns

Move left four columns

Move down five rows

Move down seven rows

Move up ten rows

Go to cell    A    1

Go to cell    C    5

Go to cell    A    1

3. Practice inserting numbers into your spreadsheet.  Make sure that cell A1 is active and say the following:

45        Tab Key          145      Tab Key          1145                Enter key

(Move to cell A 2 and say)

25        Tab Key          125      Tab Key          1125                Enter Key

(Move to cell A 3 and say)

30        Tab Key          130      Tab Key          1130                Enter Key

FYI:  It is sometimes easier to say longer numbers as individual digits as in one, one, four, five.  If the wrong numbers appear in your cells, say Undo That or choose the cell and say, Clear That then say the number again.

4.  Move to cell D 1 and say:

Add up this row

5. Add up the remaining numbers in rows 2 and 3 using the Add up this row

command.

6. Move to cell A 4 and say:

Add Up This Column

7.  Copy and paste the formula in cell A 4 to other cells by saying:

Copy This Cell

Tab Key

Paste That Here

8. Bold rows and columns with the following commands:

Select Row 4

Bold This Row

Select Column D

Bold This Column

9.  Your simple spreadsheet should look like Figure I-1.  Save your work as My Spreadsheet.

FYI:  Practice entering data into Microsoft Excel with your voice.  As you do so, open the Sample Commands and see if there are some easy to use NLT commands that you can say to enhance your spreadsheet experience.  Use the following command to view the samples:
