Manipulating Your Operating System

 

Manipulating your operating system and using NaturallySpeaking when other applications is one of the fun things to do with speech recognition.   For instance, you can save your documents by simply saying Click File, Save or open a document with the Click File, Open command.  You can open and close most Windows programs at will. 

 

Try some of the following examples and then find a few new commands using the Command Browser as demonstrated at the end of this section:

 

1.  Start the DRAGON NaturallySpeaking voice center.

 

2.  Open XpressPad and try manipulating your menus.  Start with the View menu. Say:

 

            Click View <pause>    Toolbar

            Click View <pause>    Format Bar

            Click View <pause>    Ruler

            Click View <pause>    Status bar

 

3.  Review the above commands and replace your toolbars as you like to see them appear.

 

 

44.  NaturallySpeaking gives you some specialized voice activated Windows commands.  Try a few. 

 

Start WordPad <Pause>  Click Close

 

Start Calculator <Pause>  Click Close

 

Start Paint <Pause>  Click Close

 

 

5.  Trying minimizing, restoring, and maximizing your Windows programs with the following commands.  Reopen the paint program and try the following.

 

            Start Paint  

Click Maximize

Click Restore

Click Minimize

Switch to NaturallySpeaking

Switch to Paint  

            Click Close

Switch to NaturallySpeaking

 

6.  There are dozens of possible ways to use your voice to manipulate your operating system and the programs in NaturallySpeaking.  To learn more about what you can do, try the Help menus, which open up an extensive lists of possible commands that you can use in various situations.  Scrolling down the list is the easiest way to find new commands you can use. 

 

Say this:

 

Click Help

            Help Topics

 

7.  Click the index tab or say Click Index and say the command you are looking for.  In this practice segment say:

 

            Preventing vocal strain

            Click Display

 

FYI:  You can scroll up or down this list with the Move Up 1-20 command.

8.  Close the open help windows with the Click Close command.  Open the Help menu and check out the tip of the day!  Try saying:

 

Click Help

Tip of the Day

Click Next Tip

Click Next Tip

Click Close

 

9.  Close Naturally speaking with your voice without saving.  Try this:

 

            Click File,   <Pause>     Exit (or say Click Close)

            Say Click No to avoid saving.

            Say Click Yes to save changes in your voice profile.
